It’s very important when you create a world, that you obey your own rules. Question: What motivated you to create a (mostly) wordless picture book as opposed to a traditional text + illustration book?Īlexandra Day: The answer to that one is easy: I am a painter by profession and more importantly, there was no one to talk, except the mother at the beginning and the end and the occasional adult who happens along. There is something about the realism with a touch of whimsy that makes Carl’s Christmas a great holiday read. There are so many spreads that I just absolutely adore (most of which I pictured here, because how could I not show my favorites?). On the surface that may not seem too interesting, but we are talking about realistic illustrations of a ridiculous concept. ![]() This is baby’s best friend.īut secondly, this book works so well because the illustrations are beautiful, and remarkably realistic. And yes, Carl really takes care of the baby – carrying it around, helping it with things, and adventuring with the baby. ![]() A dog takes care of a baby, finding unique ways to entertain themselves, and then they go to sleep. First off, the concept is so incredibly ridiculous that it is humorously endearing. There are two main reasons why I think Carl’s Christmas (and all the Carl books, really) remains a favorite and works fascinatingly well. ![]() ![]() ![]() A sword and sorcery tale with emotional resonance, City of a Thousand Feelings brims with both the visceral and the allegorical, allowing the two trans women at the center of the story to claim their own space.īuy it: Aqueduct Press Moontangled by Stephanie Burgis (3rd)įor just one moonlit, memorable night, Thornfell College of Magic has flung open its doors, inviting guests from around the nation to an outdoor ball intended to introduce the first-ever class of women magicians to society…but one magician and one invited guest have far more pressing goals of their own for the night. Brief Summary of Book: The Kitchen God’s Wife by Amy Tan ![]() ![]() ![]() This process leaves distinct mineral traces on the flint strike-a-lights that can be observed using a microscope. These sparks are directed onto easily flammable tinder materials which begin to smoulder once a spark has been ‘captured’. This work is primarily concerned with the stone-on-stone fire production system, so using pieces of flint as ‘strike-a-light’ tools to strike the mineral pyrite to produce sparks. My research focuses on fire use by Palaeolithic peoples, including the identification of ancient fire-making tools using experimental archaeology in combination with microwear analysis. More recently, I was awarded a Veni Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Hi, there… my name is Andrew Sorensen, and I defended my PhD in Palaeolithic Archaeology and Material Culture Studies at the Leiden Faculty of Archaeology back in December 2018. ![]() ![]() Determining when and how fire entered our technological repertoire is key to understanding who we are as a species, and as a society. It is for this reason that the development of fire as an adaptive tool by humans is of such interest to us all. Without distant coal-fired power plants, internal combustion engines, furnaces and the like, life as we know it today could not exist. Yet fire remains the basis for the vast majority of our technology and comforts, despite being largely hidden away. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, you need both for an effective book: if not within yourself, then in collaboration with others who can help you realize your goal. The author herself says several times throughout the novel that she's not the analytical research type but a feeling/perceiving sort. I felt as though I understood the aspects of emergent strategy far better through these examples than the bloated descriptions in the book's beginning, and that makes me sad. The book shines in the final section, likely because it's the part of the book that illustrates examples of how to actually practice emergent strategy. The introduction was an excessive ~40 pages and encapsulated the book's overall issue: not enough organization and trimming to communicate a vitally important concept to anyone who's not on the same wavelength as the author. ![]() ![]() Countless quotes bog down the overall message and create a murkiness that I as a reader could never recover from. ![]() I never felt as though I had enough forewarning when the book would suddenly divert into a blog post or speech. As it stands, Emergent Strategy is a rather disjointed sea of thoughts, quotes (so. I say this with the utmost love and respect for both emergent strategy as concept and the author: this desperately needed an editor. ![]() |
